What is Rosh Hashanah?   It is a celebration of the Jewish New Year that takes place on the first (and sometimes the second) day of Tishri in September.  Rosh Hashanah is the first of the High Holy Days, a ten-day period of penitence that ends with Yom Kippur—the most holy day of the Jewish year.  Also know as the Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur is often spent by fasting and spending time at the synagogue praying for forgiveness.  The loud, distinctive blowing sound of the shofar can be heard at the synagogue.  To celebrate, family and friends gather and share sweet treats during the holiday.
